7/8/2023 0 Comments Across the universe bookI loved this cover so much, that I just had to run out and make a new sci-fi outer space blog theme. I wish I could just melt into that universe and be one of those silhouetted figures! I wish my dreams looked like that. I have a puddle of drool forming right now. This cover is one of my absolute favourites. So I guess I’ll start off simple: with the cover. Since starting my blog, this is the first book I’ve read that I absolutely adored but feel like I have no idea how to review! It just left me in awe and I feel like no words can describe my love for this book. I have no idea if it's parody, satire or meant as actual erotica. Those issues that I have with "plot" aside, this didn't have any glaring grammar issues. I just hope that "Bobbie" is the author's way of getting around the Barbie trademarks because, otherwise, I have concerns about the children in Frank's "care" as Santa clearly isn't the only one he's using to fulfill his needs. I can't tell if gnomes are doing this because they love or hate Santa. A horny gnome calling himself Frank and a "Gnome on the throne" because elf on the shelf was taken, boobytrapped the chimney in his "home" so he could get some Santa sex? He binds Craig, the Santa making deliveries, to a coffee table, proceeds to have his way with Craig then informs him that the same will happen at the next house and many more that night. I thought maybe I'd get to the end and it would all have been some roleplay, but nope. I guess dubious consent is meant to be implied by the "captured" in the title because I don't see warning of that in the blurb or book and this is definitely dubcon. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Elaine scarry on beautyAdmittedly, an antifoundationalist approach to justice is as likely to be edifying as structurally frightening. But, upon examination, Scarry makes gestures to the metaphysical architects who can't conceive of how to build a theory of justice without philosophical first principles. The book is a blueprint for a stable but revolutionary building that doesn't need a foundation. The result is On Beauty and Being Just, based on the Tanner Lectures she gave at Yale University in 1998. We should applaud Elaine Scarry, Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value at Harvard University, for making an attempt to build a coherent political philosophy using only the building blocks of aesthetics. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1999. Abstract Elaine Scarry, On Beauty and Being Just. The family grew enough corn to feed themselves and their four milk cows, harvested enough hemp to sell downriver to the southern cotton balers, and salted enough venison to keep their teeth from rattling loose in the winter. Their farm was tucked in a green wrinkle of land in the middle of the country, precisely where the nation’s heart would be if it were a living body, which troops on both sides of the Civil War had overlooked as they marched past. All the symptoms, in short, of a world still riddled with open doors.īut the Larson family was, on the whole, utterly disinterested in the goings-on of the wider world, and the wider world politely returned their sentiments. The European rebellions of 1848 hung like gun smoke in the air the sepoys of India could still taste mutiny on their tongues women whispered and conspired, sewing banners and authoring pamphlets freedmen stood unshackled in the bloodied light of their new nation. But other, older words-like chaos and revolution-still lingered in the margins. The bike he had traded for was not as good as his old bike, so he had trouble maneuvering over some of the rougher patches. (Sidenote: I want some of that spice cake.)īest quote: “Dark came quickly, along with a cold and stinging rain. Also, three cheers for a great relationship with his parents! And their delivery system they had worked out was amazing. I liked his ordinary bravery and his courage to push himself for the sake of others. Also, the Tour de France? Why have I not heard of this? :D :Dīecause this was packed with fascinating history, it was a little slow in spots, but the author did a good job keeping the historical facts mostly to some pretty cool appendices in the back. This book covers a time period in history I knew next to nothing about, so frankly-I was geeking out. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by this author, so when my sisters brought this home from the library (and I suddenly remembered it was on my TBR XD), I was excited to read it. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Solzhenitsyn a day in the lifeRussian's don't really acknowledge the atrocities. Sadly, unlike NAZI death capms, Gulag camps were never turned into museums and historical sites. Non imprisoned citizens were treated in the same, just much milder, manner. I was born and raised in USSR, so to me this story is not shocking. Non Soviet Citizens, You Need To Know This! Publication of the book split the Communist hierarchy, and it was Premier Khrushchev himself who read the book and personally allowed its publication. Within a week, Solzhenitsyn was no longer an obscure math teacher, but an international celebrity. Within 24 hours, all 95,000 copies of the magazine containing this story were sold out. In 1962, the Soviet literary magazine Novy Mir published a short novel by an unknown writer named Solzhenitsyn. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich "confessed" to "high treason" and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich brilliantly portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Solzhenitsyn’s startling book led, almost 30 years later, to Glasnost, Perestroika, and the "Fall of the Wall". 7/7/2023 0 Comments The bacchaThe kidnapping occurred on August 24 while the boy was sleeping close to his mother on the platform at Mathura Railway Station, according to the police. Sandberg quotes Pattie Sellers, Editor at Large at Fortune Magazine, who offers a much better metaphor – think of it as a jungle gym. And the view of someone looking up from the bottom of a ladder is… less than ideal. One enlightening point Sandberg makes early in the book is that the common metaphor of thinking of climbing the “corporate ladder” is the wrong way to look at it. Throughout the course of a captivating and insightful book, Sandberg explores not only the challenges of leading as a woman in the work place, but also shares her thoughts on how current leadership could do better to provide equality for all, and offers strong words of encouragement and guidance for those who are actively leading. Authored by Sheryl Sandberg, formerly a vice president at Google and now Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, I found it to be an interesting, edifying, and very worthwhile read. One of the more recent and popular entries to the long list of good leadership books was Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. |
